Those who experience a significant weight loss due to dieting, sickness or weight loss surgery often have excess skin that needs to be removed. You might need some body contouring because of excess skin that might be noticeable on the arms, thighs, stomach or breasts.
Over the years, several different procedures have been developed by plastic surgeons to remove this excess skin, giving the patient a sense of normalcy once again. Below is some information about some of these procedures.
This procedure is performed when skin has been stretched beyond its retractable capacity in the stomach area. Skin in this area might be stretched excessively when someone is extremely obese and loses the weight or it can also occur as a result of multiple pregnancies.
Abdominoplasty is commonly called a tummy tuck, and is the surgical removal of wrinkles and excess skin and fat in the stomach area by incision. During the surgery, the abdominal wall muscles are tightened, dramatically reducing the appearance of a protruding abdomen. The surgery does leave permanent scars.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Women may have excess skin in the breasts or extreme sagging from weight loss or pregnancies and breast feeding. A surgical procedure called mastopexy can reduce the sagging and reclaim firmness.
During a mastopexy, excess skin is surgically removed from the breasts by incision and a reshaping of the breasts occurs. Firmness and size can be increased by using breast implants if desired. The dark skin around the nipple called the areola can also be reduced during a mastopexy.
Upper Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
If excess skin appears under the arms, a surgical procedure call brachioplasty, or upper arm lift, can be performed to reduce or eliminate the skin. An incision is made from the elbow up to the armpit, usually on the inner arm toward the back to help minimize visible scarring. The scars may fade somewhat within the first year, depending on the patient’s skin.
Thigh Lift (Thighplasty)
A thigh lift procedure is performed when excess skin appears on the thighs. The skin and fat are removed by an incision at the groin area, and the remaining skin is stretched back in place. A scar might appear temporarily at the hip.
Each procedure above was developed to help those who have lost excessive weight to regain their normal figure somewhat. Many people are able to enjoy normal lives after a dramatic weight loss experience.
