Cosmetic procedures for men are on the rise, as men realize they, too, can benefit.
More men than ever are seeking ways to look younger or feel better about themselves.
Men made up about 8% of the clients seeking cosmetic procedures in 2016, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It was a 3% increase from the year prior, and the number is on trend to keep growing.
Breast reduction a popular procedure
The procedure making news lately has been breast reduction for men.
The scientific term for enlarged male breasts is “gynecomastia.” It’s not something you’ve probably heard about, but it’s actually quite common, affecting as many as 70% of men throughout their lives.
Gynecomastia is typically caused by a hormonal imbalance that begins with puberty. There are triggers, though, including smoking marijuana or taking certain prescription drugs.
While it’s more common that women have cosmetic procedures these days more men are starting to seek help, too.
Gynecomastia doesn’t have to be permanent. Men can have breast reduction surgery, which can immensely help boost confidence, especially in Florida, where men can go shirtless pretty much most of the year.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons said in their 2016 report that nearly 28,000 men sought breast reduction surgery.
Since gynecomastia can begin with puberty, there were about 7,100 boys ages 13 to 19 who sought the surgery, making up 26% of all men who had it done.
Looking further at the numbers, 35% of men ages 20 to 29 had the procedure, and the rest were all above the age of 40.
More men are also seeking a little help getting rid of extra fat.
The Society reports that about 27,000 men had at least one liposuction treatment in 2016, an increase of 5% over the prior year.
The outpatient procedure is done under local anesthesia, so there are fewer side effects and a quicker recovery time. Fat can be removed from nearly every part of the body, depending on where a man wants to see results. It could be the hips, stomach, buttocks or ankles.
