Cosmetic procedures – big and small – should always be done by a licensed, experienced doctor and/or specialist, or you risk serious complications.
NBC Miami recently reported that the FDA issued a warning after the underground industry of illegal silicone fillers apparently spread from South Florida to the rest of the country.
They reported that over the past 18 years, a number of people died after receiving illegal silicone fillers in their buttocks. They cited the case of a South Florida woman who was convicted after another woman died after she received illegal fillers in her hips, thighs, butt, and breasts.
The injections the woman administered contained some pretty nasty things that shouldn’t go into a body, including cement and Fix-A-Flat®.
The FDA issued their warning in November, telling people to beware of illegal fillers using silicone that’s supposed to be used to lubricate machinery! Of course, you wouldn’t know what’s in a filler – which is why you should always go to a facility with certified doctors and specialists.
With cosmetic procedures on the rise, it’s vital that you seek a professional to do the work and stay away from someone who can’t produce a verifiable license – or good references or reviews.
So, if a friend says “I know a guy who can do it and he’s super cheap!”, you’ll want to do some footwork to make sure that guy is legitimate.
After all, having a cosmetic procedure is supposed to make you look and feel good, not scar you for life.
Cosmetic procedures: Do your research
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that patients ensure their doctor is highly trained, certified and operating in an accredited facility. You can research doctors at www.plasticsurgery.org. You can also go to the Florida Department of Health website to do a license search.
Of course, any surgery carries risks, but those increase exponentially by trying to save money or time.
That’s why it’s also important that your doctor or specialist is well aware of the risks and can discuss any factors and alternatives with you.
For instance, you may think you need a surgical facelift, but a Swan Thread-Lift™ may be your best option. The same goes for fillers and injections. Your doctor at Swan Centers will go over the best option for you based on your medical history and the outcome you want to achieve.
